India legend Sachin Tendulkar has denied being in fray for the post of becoming the next BCCI President. Roger Binny, who is the current BCCI President since October 2022, will relinquish the post in October as he turned 70 this year. BCCI has the norm which prohibits any official to hold the office after 70. On September 28, the Annual General Meeting will be held in Mumbai and the board will elect its new President and the next Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman. The current IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal is also highly likely to vacate the post after completing his six-year term.
Discussing the nominees regarding the BCCI President position, there were some media reports that asserted that the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar might succeed Binny. However, Tendulkar, through his organisation SRT Sports Management PVT LTD, issued a statement and disclaimed such claims. A statement released by SRT Sports Management PVT LTD read, “It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations.”
Impactful figures graced the BCCI President post in the past
In the past, eminent figures have been in the position of the BCCI President. In 2014, World Cup 1983 champion Sunil Gavaskar became the interim president until 2015. He was succeeded by Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was known for his excellent administrative skills in cricket. After Dalimya, Shashank Manohar held the post for more than a year.
In 2016-17, Anurag Thakur also handled the responsibility. From 2019-22, ex-India skipper Sourav Ganguly was in power and under him, India conducted the T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai during the reign of COVID-19. In 2022, Roger Binny became the President and under his leadership, India organised the World Cup 2023, which enjoyed massive success.
