The 15th match of the Women's World Cup 2025 between Sri Lanka and New Zealand concluded in no result as heavy rain in Colombo didn't allow the second innings to be conducted. Winning the toss, Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu elected to bat first. Sri Lanka skipper and Vishmi Gunaratne stitched a 101-run stand for the opening wicket off just 139 balls. Athapaththu went back to the dugout after scoring 53 off 72 while Vishmi also made a vital contribution of 42 off 83. Following their departure, Harshitha Samarawickrama also displayed composure and chipped in with her 26 (31) respectively. Kavisha Dilhari put up a flop show with her bat as she fell against Sophie Devine after scoring only four runs.
In the 43rd over, Hasini Perera also departed after amassing 44 off 61. In the final overs of the innings, Nilakshi de Silva exhibited her ferocious side and took New Zealand's bowling attack to the cleaners. She racked up an unbeaten 55 off 28. Her innings was studded with eight boundaries (seven fours and a maximum). Riding on her exemplary effort, Sri Lanka erected a fine total of 258/6 in 50 overs. Sophie Devine was the most effective bowler for the White Ferns as she registered 3/54 figures in her nine overs.
New Zealand didn't get a chance to bat due to rain
Following the first innings, showers didn't stop in Colombo. Umpire kept eyes on the conditions but finally, at 9:40 pm, the match ended in no result and both teams had to satisfy themselves with one point each. After four outings, New Zealand have hoarded only three points with one win and no result and they are now in the fifth spot on the points table. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are in seventh place on the tally with just two points.
Sri Lanka's next contest is against South Africa on October 17 while New Zealand will also stay in Colombo for their game against Pakistan on October 18. New Zealand have to win their remaining matches to stay in the knockout race.
