Vijay Shankar has decided to leave his domestic side Tamil Nadu for Tripura. Shankar, 34 played a lot of cricket for Tamil Nadu. In December 2012, Shankar made his First-Class debut for the team against Vidarbha in Nagpur. Since then, he has played 70 matches for Vidarbha in which he scored 3702 runs with 11 hundreds and 22 fifties in 95 innings. In the 2024-25 season, Shankar looked decent with his bat, scoring 476 runs with two centuries and a fifty in 11 innings of six games.
Shankar spoke to CricBuzz and revealed that he has received the NOC from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) but is yet to receive a formal letter from the Tripura Cricket Association. "I have obtained the NOC from TNCA but am yet to receive confirmation from the Tripura Cricket Association. I will be able to officially announce my switch once I get the formal approval letter from Tripura," said Shankar.

Vijay Shankar has also played white-ball cricket for Team India. Appearing in 12 One-Day Internationals (ODI), he has scored 223 runs in eight innings of 12 contests. In T20 Internationals (T20I), he has amassed 101 runs in four innings of nine games. His last outing for India came in the Cricket World Cup 2019 game against the West Indies in June 2019.
