The Kolkata Knight Riders came into the IPL with a title mentality and a roster full of well-known players. However, the results saw them end up with an underwhelming seventh position and no play-off berth. KKR collected just 13 points out of their 14 matches, following an IPL season full of confusions, injuries, and mismanagement. Their main issues revolved around the fact that they had suffered an absolutely horrific start that left them struggling right from the outset; their bowing unit was weakened by injuries and inconsistencies, and they took wrong calls during the auctions and on leadership positions.

Their season could easily be split into two halves where the difference is evident. In the first one, there were a lot of confusions and no apparent direction. However, in the second one, the KKR recovered as evidenced by their impressive winning streak of 5 out of their last 6 games. It just proves that their start affected them heavily in terms of momentum.

1. KKR losing first 6 matches

The playoffs for KKR were out of question even before the midway point of the IPL season was achieved. In the initial six matches played by them, KKR managed to lose five matches. This is because of the five losses they had incurred in the first six matches, only one match had ended as a washout and hence, they scored only one point.

These losses included those against teams like Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings, and Gujarat Titans. The statistics clearly depict the enormity of their poor performance. They lost heavily to Hyderabad by 65 runs and also couldn't defend or chase their way through in some close matches. The reality was that even in a tournament comprising ten teams, a 16-point score became the benchmark for a team qualifying for the playoffs.

2. Injuries troubled the bowling unit

However, KKR’s winning ways in previous seasons depended significantly on their bowlers. In IPL 2026, however, this strategy did not work owing to injury to some of the bowlers as well as lack of control shown by other bowlers. Both Harshit Rana and Mathiesha Pathirana missed vital matches due to fitness problems. One of the most expensive buys of KKR at 25.20 crore, Cameron Green, was constrained with the ball during the early stages of the tournament. Consequently, the bowling lineup was unable to perform effectively.

There was evidence of the failure of the KKR bowlers in several matches. During one of the matches against Gujarat Titans, for instance, the spin bowlers conceded 96 runs in 11 overs without taking any wickets. Varun Chakravarthy also started poorly. The bowler was unable to take any wicket in his initial games and conceded more than ten runs per over. On his part, Vaibhav Arora could not give KKR any breakthrough while Sunil Narine could not take match-turning wickets.

3. Auction Decisions Hurt The Team

The selection strategy of the KKR squad backfired terribly. The team went away from the successful aggressive squad they once used before. Rahane, captaining the team, was regularly required to play the anchorman’s role. While he was capable of scoring crucial runs, he and his team mates failed to make use of the power play overs well. In Finn Allen, they got a poor start, despite him starting off the season well. Green could not find his place as a consistent batsman, and Rinku Singh continued to struggle in the middle order.

This continuous change only led to confusion instead of providing any flexibility. Narine batted up the order in one game, although he had been playing at a lower position previously. Even Green batted at different positions, while young players too were made to change their roles in the batting line-up. The team never managed to get an ideal batting combination even till halfway through the IPL.
