The Chennai Super Kings are currently going through their period of resurgence in IPL 2026 with a string of dominant performances. The success of the side has been reliant on the form of Sanju Samson as he has carried the batting unit to many run chases. They have had plenty of positives to cheer for with Jamie Overton proving to be the ‘X factor’ of the side. They have had a couple of young talents emerging in the form of Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer. Urvil Patel smashed the joint-fastest half-century in the IPL with a breathtaking knock against LSG.

However, they also have some weaknesses which they will be keen to solve ahead of the fixture against LSG. All teams are competing against each other and the intensity of the playoffs battle is increasing with every game. It is the business end of the IPL and CSK will be hoping to leave no stone unturned to secure their spot in the top 4. Ahead of the game against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, here are the 3 weaknesses CSK will have to address:

1) Jamie Overton’s absence leaves massive void in CSK setup

Jamie Overton has been the dark horse for the Chennai Super Kings in this edition of the IPL as he has been simply exceptional with the ball. Ruturaj Gaikwad almost uses him like a man for the crisis and almost every time he’s given the ball to Overton, he has created some magic. Jamie Overton impressed the management with his bowling skills in such a way that CSK decided to trust him as their fifth bowler. Chennai will have to find a way to cope with his absence as he can provide some crucial breakthroughs with the ball and some handy runs in the lower order.

2) Middle-order inconsistency remains Chennai Super Kings’ biggest concern

Sanju Samson has been their key to success in majority of the games in this edition of the IPL and in the Orange Cap leaderboard, there is just 1 batter in the top 20 batters in this season. That would probably sum up the campaign of the Chennai Super Kings so far and they have had few promising knocks in the middle order.

But even in the game against LSG, they were in complete control of the game but they still scored just 43 runs and lost 4 wickets from the 9th over till the 16th over. Even in such a game where the CSK batting unit crossed the 120-run mark in just 9 overs, they dragged the chase right till the last over of the game. This would be an area of primary concern and they will have to find some way for their middle order to score runs.

3)Lack of reliable pace support around Anshul Kamboj worries CSK

The Chennai Super Kings bowling unit has been predominantly led by Anshul Kamboj and the spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad. With Jamie Overton unavailable, Anshul Kamboj could prove to be the lone warrior of the pace bowling unit. Mukesh Choudhary has been decent but still not at his best. He has been expensive in this season and he hasn’t been amongst the wickets. The importance of a strong pace unit is mandatory to pick wickets in the power play and to have some economical overs at the death. It will be a difficult challenge for CSK to find someone to match the quality of Jamie Overton and to provide some support to Anshul Kamboj.
