Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has advised the team management to rethink its opening combination, saying an all left-handed pair may not be the ideal long-term solution in T20Is. Speaking after India's recent matches, the former cricketer said, "Abhishek Sharma & Vaibhav sooryavanshi cannot be India's openers for long term. Two left handed batsman cannot be openers. You have to keep Sanju samson on top. A right handed Batsman, a left-handed batsman, whether Abhishek Sharma plays three or vaibhav sooryavanshi plays three, one of them will have to play three. There is no other choice." He believes a left-right combination would make life more difficult for opposition bowlers and provide better tactical balance.

The 44-year-old pointed out that having two left-handers at the top allows rival teams to settle into their plans more easily, especially with match-ups and field placements. According to him, India's batting lineup should include a right-handed opener alongside either of the two youngsters to maintain variety and reduce predictability.

His remarks came after Vaibhav Suryavanshi's debut at the top of the order alongside Abhishek Sharma, a combination that has generated considerable excitement because of its fearless approach. While Kaif acknowledged the immense talent both youngsters possess, he stressed that long-term success at the international level requires tactical flexibility rather than relying solely on attacking stroke play.

The comments have sparked debate among fans, with some supporting the suggestion of a left-right opening pair, while others believe the young duo deserves a longer run together before any changes are made. As India continue to experiment ahead of major ICC tournaments, the team management will have to decide whether to persist with the exciting partnership or introduce a right-handed batter to achieve the balance that Kaif believes is essential for sustained success.
