South Africa captain Aiden Markram has revealed that the heartbreaking loss to India in the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final remains the toughest moment of his cricket career.
Speaking on The Super Over Podcast, Markram was asked about the hardest moment he has experienced on the field. Without hesitation, he replied, "The 2024 World Cup final." He admitted that the defeat still lingers with him despite South Africa's subsequent success in winning the ICC World Test Championship.
Reflecting on the painful loss, Markram said, "That was probably the toughest moment of my career. It still hurts. You get so close to achieving something you've dreamed of, and then it slips away."
South Africa looked destined to lift their maiden ICC trophy after needing just 30 runs from the final five overs against India in Barbados. However, India's exceptional death bowling and Suryakumar Yadav's stunning boundary catch to dismiss David Miller turned the match around as the Proteas fell seven runs short.
Markram added that while the defeat was incredibly painful, it also became a source of motivation. "Those moments stay with you. They drive you to make sure you're better prepared the next time you're in that position."
The Proteas skipper (for limited overs) has since enjoyed redemption by leading South Africa to their historic World Test Championship triumph over Australia by becoming the Player of the Match for the historic event. However, he acknowledged that the memories of the 2024 T20 World Cup final have not faded, describing it as the defining low point of his playing career.
Aiden Markram credits Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah for India's World Cup triumph in 2024
South Africa captain Aiden Markram has hailed Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah as the two players who turned the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final in India's favour, admitting their performances shattered the Proteas' dream of lifting a maiden global title.
Speaking on The Super Over Podcast, Markram recalled that South Africa had executed their plans perfectly early in the match by removing India's dangerous top order. However, he admitted they could not find a way past Kohli, whose composed innings kept India alive.
"We got off to a perfect start by dismissing their top order early, but we just couldn't get Virat Kohli out. He kept India alive when they were under pressure. Virat is a true big-match player. Even though he didn't have the best tournament, he saved his best for the final against us," Markram said.
The Proteas skipper also reserved special praise for Jasprit Bumrah, whose spell during the death overs swung the momentum decisively in India's favour after South Africa had taken control of the chase.
"Then Jasprit Bumrah came in and completely changed the game with his incredible spell. His bowling shifted the momentum, and that's why we ended up losing the World Cup final," Markram added.
India eventually defended 176 to win by seven runs, with Kohli scoring a match-winning 76 and Bumrah finishing with figures of 2/18 while earning the Player of the Tournament award. Markram admitted the defeat still hurts, calling it "the biggest heartbreak of my life," as South Africa fell agonisingly short of their first ICC men's World Cup title.
