The Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Ajinkya Rahane had opened up about his future in the team as a skipper and he claimed that he is not the kind of skipper that backs down. It was indeed a difficult season for KKR as they were winless in their first 7 games and their form came a bit too late.
Ajinkya Rahane was also criticised for his strike rate and the statement that he has made is indeed reflective of his mentality as the skipper of the side. The experts were critical in KKR having Ajinkya Rahane as their skipper and their massive dip in form. They were under significant criticism for their performance and they also had to deal with a lot of injury crises as well.
“I'm never one to back down, those thoughts never came to me. When the team is down, when the team is struggling, it's very important to show your character at that time. Yes, there's pressure. It's very natural but the pressure is on those who are privileged. Not everyone can handle the pressure. For me, it was important to stay strong and not panic,” said Ajinkya Rahane on his future as the KKR skipper.
KKR’s late fightback causes uncertainty regarding future of Rahane’s captaincy
The IPL 2026 season definitely hasn’t been the ideal one for KKR but they should keep their head high on how they fought back after a difficult start. Nothing seemed to be going right for the side with so many losses on the trot and they were frequently shuffling around their team, showing a major sign of uncertainty.
On their defense, their frontline pacers such as Matheesha Pathirana, Harshit Rana and Akash Deep were unavailable and that took a huge toll on their starting squad. The form of their middle order was also poor as Rinku Singh couldn’t contribute much with the bat and their opening pair wasn’t on top of their game as well.
But they didn’t back out entirely after the poor start as they started off their campaign with a dominant victory against the Rajasthan Royals and since then, there has been a change in energy. They even found a new gem in Kartik Tyagi as he was amazing for them this season with some key wickets and lethal bowling.
Finn Allen clicked into form with some power-packed innings including a match-winning knock against the Gujarat Titans. KKR looked like a dangerous side as they were playing with the mentality that they had nothing to lose. However their resurgence came a bit too late and they couldn’t just make it to the playoffs.
KKR could look into a different captaincy option with some exciting Indian players lining up for the mega auction and Ajinkya Rahane could lose his spot in the side. They didn’t qualify for the playoffs in the previous season as well and after their triumph in 2024, KKR hasn’t really clicked off like they usually do.
