Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, celebrated as one of the greatest batters in the sport's history, shared a touching tribute to Ben Stokes following the England all-rounder's announcement of his retirement from international cricket. Referring to Stokes as "one of England's finest," Tendulkar highlighted his fearless style, knack for winning matches, and inspiring leadership.
He noted how Stokes consistently infused energy and positivity into the game, delivering unforgettable performances even in high-pressure situations. Tendulkar also acknowledged Stokes' daring captaincy, as he said, "I've always admired the way you brought energy into the game. Your positivity, your fearless intent, and the way you shaped moments under pressure stood out every time you walked in. As an all-rounder, you've been one of England's finest, and as a captain, your bold tactics and instinctive reading of the game added a new edge to your side."
Stokes revealed that the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge would mark his last international match. His England career came to a close on Monday as New Zealand secured a 160-run victory, winning the three-match series 2-1. Stokes observed the final moments of the match from the balcony outside England's dressing room, bringing an end to an extraordinary 15-year journey in international cricket.
Ben Stokes Says He Has No Regrets Over Retirement Decision
Just a day after announcing his retirement, Ben Stokes shared that he feels completely at peace with his choice. When asked if he’d be okay watching England's home Ashes series against Australia from the comfort of his sofa next year, the 35-year-old replied that he was "incredibly content" and had no regrets, as he said, "I'm done, mate, and I'm very happy."
Stokes' retirement followed a whirlwind few weeks where he led England to victory in the first Test at Lord's, only to find himself caught up in an off-field incident during a night out with teammate Gus Atkinson. They were at a nightclub when a member of England's security team was reportedly hit by a rugby player from Saracens.
Stokes described the incident as "unfortunate" and "interesting," admitting it might have influenced the timing of his retirement. However, he emphasized that the main reason was the physical and mental strain he had endured in recent years as England's captain. He mentioned that everything he had experienced over the past six to twelve months had taken a toll on him, and that the pressures of leadership often go unseen.
Stokes wrapped up his career having played 122 Tests, 114 ODIs, and 43 T20Is, amassing 7,273 Test runs, 3,463 ODI runs, and 585 T20I runs. He also concluded with 252 Test wickets, 74 ODI wickets, and 26 T20I wickets, leaving behind a legacy as one of England's top all-rounders. He also leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having played key roles in England's 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup triumphs, besides leading the Test side through the Bazball era.
