Huge shockwaves emerged last week given Australia, of all teams, were beaten fair and square and that too, at their own backyard in the opening test of the 2-match series against Bangladesh. While on the one hand, the spirited and resplendent win by the visiting side was dubbed a win for the ages and clearly, the most impressive cricketing achievement for Bangladesh as on date, the media came daggers drawn for the hosts, Australia. While it’s one thing to lose a Test, happens all the time and to the best of the sides out there, to have lost by a comprehensive margin of 9 wickets and emerging vanquished in front of Bangladesh was perhaps the bigger, more shocking headline for the Aussies.
A huge upset
Some called it a shock that will likely give the Pat Cummins lead side plenty of factors to consider before the start of the second and the decisive Test while others called it perhaps the biggest upset in the game that the Australians have come to endure. And that too, as one date!
But irrespective of how you and I assess and see the side of things for what they are, it’s pretty clear that Australia are already working on correcting some of the factors that probably didn’t go in their favour. The efforts, as one notes, are currently on to iron out the weaklings. And to encourage the underperforming lot to come to the party in order to contribute to a team that really needs some urgent good work! Isn’t it?
A lost chance!
And if that’s the term to express what’s happened then it helps to note that someone like Beau Webster has to come to the party and get going given he can contribute from both skills. As far as his most recent or the previous contest was concerned, then it helps to note that the for the powerful cricketer, the Test match that culminated in a defeat was a totally lost opportunity.
The tall right arm bowling all rounder was only able to score one double digit score in the recently concluded Test match. Moreover, he could, at best, score just 12 runs. In the second innings, when Australia were really struggling to get on top of the Bangladeshi bowling and when runs were urgently needed, it didn’t help to note that the otherwise talented lanky all rounder from Tasmania was able to score just 5 runs.
Moreover, he emerged wicketless having bowled in both the innings of the game and thus that key contribution that an all rounder usually brings to the game, was clearly missing. Having said that, runs are urgently needed from some of the other redoubtable talents with the bat for the Aussies and the likes of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne have to really come to the party!
