The Board of Control for Cricket in India has officially banned the use of smart sunglasses by players, match officials, and support staff within the Players and Match Officials Area. This instruction comes up from the Anti Corruption Unit to ensure that no security breaches do occur in the game.

They have recognised a possibility of external contact with the use of such advanced technology and that could ultimately undermine the integrity of the tournament. This could be considered as an extension to the protocol that directs against the use of gadgets in the dugouts by team members.

According to an official advisory issued to all IPL franchises, the BCCI ACSU noted that several tech companies have actively been marketing and selling these advanced wearable devices directly to players and team staff. This instruction is to help maintain the honesty and transparency for fair play. There are chances for external communications to take place with the use of such devices and it is indeed a valuable effort that has been taken to identify the loophole and to rectify it.

Strict ACSU measures implemented to prevent security breaches

The core issue driving this ban is the sheer capability of modern smart sunglasses. Unlike standard eyewear used to battle glare on the field, smart glasses are essentially wearable computers. The BCCI highlighted several specific features that triggered the restriction. Built-in cameras allow users to broadcast a first-person view of the PMOA and that could probe a security threat.

The features also include transmitting messages and speakers are added along with microphones. Every feature seems like it could be used for malpractice and the BCCI wouldn’t want to take any further chances after everything that has happened in this season.

The PMOA has been considered as one of the most strictly regulated areas as there is a restriction on the entry of digital devices. Smartphones and Laptops have been included in the restrictions but the evolution of sunglasses has been a matter of recent development. Hence, the use of smart sunglasses and its probable damages has been anticipated by the Anti Corruption Unit.

By clamping down on smart sunglasses, the BCCI ACSU is closing a critical technological loophole. The board has issued a strict warning to all the franchises regarding the rules and any breach in the security could result in serious consequences. There could even be a chance of a ban if such regulations are violated by any of the franchises in the IPL.
