Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 future faces scrutiny as the BCCI eyes the England tour as a crucial test, with rising young talents intensifying competition for India’s middle order.

Suryakumar Yadav's future as India's T20I captain and his place in the team for the 2028 T20 World Cup and Los Angeles Olympics are under review by the BCCI due to a prolonged dip in batting form. While he remains the first-choice leader for head coach Gautam Gambhir, the selection committee is reportedly viewing the upcoming June-July 2026 tour of Ireland and England as a decisive "audition" for his long-term tenure. Despite leading India to a record third T20 World Cup title in 2026, Suryakumar’s individual batting has been inconsistent. He went through the entire 2025 season without a single half-century in 21 matches.

“Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based,” a BCCI source told PTI.

By the 2028 global events, Suryakumar will be 38 years old. The BCCI is weighing whether to invest in him for another two-year cycle or transition to younger prospects. The rise of youngsters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is expected to debut during the Ireland series, and others like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, has intensified competition for middle-order slots.
