Ben Stokes has officially been added to Durham's 15-man squad for their upcoming four-day match against Northamptonshire. The highly anticipated game begins on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Durham's home ground, Chester-le-Street. This marks his first return to competitive cricket since the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) dropped him from the national Test team following a late-night nightclub scuffle. Durham's head coach, Ryan Campbell, was quick to offer support. He publicly stated that Durham's doors are always open for their local players. He noted that Stokes admitted his mistake, put his hand up, and is ready to compete. Coach Campbell mentioned that Stokes has been training hard with the team all week and appears to be in "good spirits" ahead of the game. This will be Stokes' third time playing for Durham this summer. He previously played two games for them back in May to get in shape for the international season.
PDurham is currently having an exceptional season in the County Championship Division Two. Having a world-class player like Stokes join their ranks gives them an even bigger advantage. Durham is currently unbeaten and sits comfortably at the top of the leaderboard with 126 points from seven games. While Stokes is England's Test captain, he will not be the captain of Durham. The county team is captained by batsman Alex Lees. While the England national team fights out the second Test match against New Zealand at The Oval, Stokes will be playing a completely separate local match. Even though Stokes is banned from the international team during the current investigation, the Cricket Regulator has cleared him to play domestic county games.
