
Bangladesh Cricket Board has called off both the BPL games that were scheduled for Tuesday (30th December) after former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia, passed away on Tuesday morning. Her demise has cast a deep shadow of mourning across the country, including the national sports arena.
Almost all sports federations, including the Bangladesh Football Federationand ,BPL have expressed profound condolences over her passing. As a mark of respect, all scheduled matches for the day have been suspended.
The news came just hours before the first match of the day between Syhlet and Chattogram was about to take place. BCB made an announcement that today’s matches has been cancelled and will be rescheduled. The revised fixtures will be communicated in due course.
He Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh,” the BCB stated in an X post.
“The BCB recalls with gratitude her constant blessings and good wishes for the progress of cricket in the country. During her tenure as Prime Minister, she provided outstanding support for the development of cricket in Bangladesh, significantly contributing to improvements in cricket infrastructure and the growth of the sport nationwide. Her vision and encouragement helped pave the way for many of the advancements the game enjoys today” the post read further
Bangladesh Premier League began on 26th December and so far three match days has been completed. The second match, scheduled for Tuesday, was set to feature Dhaka Capitals and Rangpur Riders. Since there are multiple breaks between match days, the postponement is not expected to affect the overall schedule significantly.
Begum Khaleda Zia was widely known as a passionate supporter of sports. Former athletes, sports organizers and various sports bodies have expressed deep sorrow and paid tribute to her legacy following her demise.
