The Chennai Super Kings fans were disappointed with the environment in the Chinnaswamy Stadium after the match against RCB. Some of the fans took to social media to express the difficulties they faced during the match due to the remarks made by the DJ. They had tagged the BCCI, IPL, Jay Shah and the Karnataka Cricket Association President, Venkatesh Prasad, in their post.
Dear @IPL @BCCI @JayShah Worst behaviour by the DJ at Chinnaswamy stadium. Don’t know what they have learnt from the previous mishap, but the behaviour is nothing but instigating fans for another one. Hope @ChennaiIPL files an official complaint. Cc @venkateshprasad https://t.co/SEXOlyP9WC

The CSK fan claimed that the RCB fans were taunting the travelling fans in such a way that groups of 5 or 6 people target a couple of Chennai fans. Even the DJ was commenting when the wickets were falling for Chennai, stating that they have a train to catch, and that’s why the wickets are falling quickly. The DJ had also mentioned an aspect of dominatio,n stating they have control from the Marina Beach in Tamil Nadu, which brings in the emotion of the state as well. The Chennai fan also said that the RCB fans are trying to twist the clash into a rivalry between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, rather than focusing on the battle between the franchises. The visiting fans have voiced the discomfort they faced while watching the match, and they seemed to be terrified by the treatment of their fans away from home.
Fan Rivalry Adds Edge, but Line Between Banter and Harassment Under Scrutiny
However, it is also to be noted that such experiences do occur for every travelling fan in the IPL. After RCB’s loss in the opening game against CSK at Chepauk in the 2024 season, there were several clips that went viral in which the home fans were mocking the RCB fans for their trophyless run. They even teased the RCB slogan “Ee Sala Cup Namde” with a hysterical figure of a lollipop, and also gave the fans plastic cups as they were unable to achieve a real IPL trophy at that point in time. Every home stadium in the IPL tends to favour the home side, and the reason why home fixtures are given importance is not just because of the familiarity of the pitch but also due to the support that the home team gets from the home crowd.
Such experiences for visiting fans tend to be a part of the game, and it occurs in almost every high-voltage clash in the IPL. But offences such as harassment and physical abuse should not be tolerated by any set of fans, and that does call for legal interventions. Rather than dwelling on the intent of fans while making such comments, it would be best to take it in the spirit of the game, as this kind of drama is what makes the IPL feel alive.
