Chennai Super Kings are expected to hold discussions with former captain MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad before deciding on their next head coach, according to a report by Cricbuzz. CSK are currently looking for a replacement for Stephen Fleming who stepped down from his position after 18 years with the franchise. The report claims that the team's CEO and director will meet Dhoni and Gaikwad before the final decision is made. An overseas coach is reportedly the preferred option at this stage. Fleming's departure brings an end to one of the longest coaching partnerships in the IPL. He joined CSK in 2008 and was in charge for all five of their IPL title wins.

CSK have struggled in the last few seasons. They finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025 and could not make a comeback in 2026 either. The five time champions will now have to make some important calls as it looks to rebuild the team. MS Dhoni's role in those discussions could be particularly important. He has been at the centre of CSK's plans for much of the franchise's history and has worked closely with Fleming throughout their successful run.
Brendon McCullum Emerges as Potential Stephen Fleming Replacement at CSK
England head coach Brendon McCullum could be in contention to replace Fleming at CSK. There has been a lot of chatter suggesting that McCullum could move in the opposite direction and replace Fleming at CSK, particularly amid indications that the England and Wales Cricket Board could be open to allowing coaches to take up IPL assignments during suitable windows. The former New Zealand captain has played for CSK in the past and holds a good relationship with the team management.
According to Cricbuzz, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise has deliberately held off discussing potential recruits until its new coach is in place. “We have not started applying our minds on this. First, we will have a coach. We have got calls from many interested candidates. We will sit and finalise,” he said.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is also expected to be involved in the process. The 29-year-old took over as CSK captain in 2024 and remains an important part of the team's plans. There is no word yet on who CSK are considering for the job. The franchise could take some time before announcing Fleming's successor, with the management first expected to discuss its options and then make a decision.
