The European T20 Premier League (ETPL) represents the first ICC-sanctioned, multi-country franchise league in Europe. Organised jointly by Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association, the tournament aims to bridge the gap between European associate nations and elite global cricket. Rahul Dravid is part of a dominant Indian consortium that acquired the Dublin franchise for a long-term 10-year period valued at £11.1m ($15m). Former India spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been appointed captain of the Dublin Guardians. Dravid highlighted that his decision to invest was driven by ETPL's vision for grassroots development and expanding cricket paths across Europe. He clarified that he will focus on building team structure off the field while leaving match day decisions to Ashwin and cricket experts.
The inaugural ETPL season is an ICC-sanctioned tournament set to run from 26 August to 20 September 2026, with matches hosted in Dublin and The Hague. The first season features 33 matches total. Due to logistical streamlining, all 2026 fixtures are confined to just two initial hubs: Dublin, Ireland and The Hague, Netherlands. The layout strictly uses a traditional Double Round-Robin format where every franchise plays each other twice. The top four teams advance to a Page playoff structure (Qualifier, Eliminators, and Final).

Ravichandran Ashwin to lead Dublin Guardians in ETPL
Ravichandran Ashwin has officially been named the captain and mentor of the Dublin Guardians for the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) season. His appointment establishes a formidable leadership tandem with team co-owner Rahul Dravid. It also marks a major milestone for European cricket development. Dravid will dedicate his energy entirely to building the franchise framework, structural governance, and establishing grassroots cricket clinics. Beyond leading the starting XI, Ashwin is specifically tasked with guiding and nurturing the emerging local talents drafted into the squad from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands.

The strategic pairing of Dravid and Ashwin was the final puzzle piece needed to secure a massive television broadcast package in India. League insiders noted that securing an Indian TV deal was the primary reason the Dublin franchise announcement was withheld until May 2026. With two of India's most respected modern cricket figures locked in, the franchise is expected to anchor the league's viewership in the subcontinent.
