His talent is known to all as is his sense of timing and the ability to go big with the bat on bigger occasions, and we’ve seen plenty of that already in the IPL 2026. From having debuted as a 13 year old to hitting the fastest 500 runs in the league, ever, to scoring a smashing 103 and then as seen last evening, scoring a powerful and decisive 97 – Sooryavanshi has done all of it on his own. And he has done so in great sublime fashion. Some think he’s reckless with his shot making while the others may feel that he is a bit too over aggressive. But at the end, it tends to work well for him and for the favour of his side, Rajasthan Royals. But does the success in the IPL automatically guarantee a swift transition into the Indian cricket team?
And should even be drafted into the Indian team because he still young and still unbeknownst to the challenges that International Cricket poses, something that can easily wear down a talent? We don’t know yet. Do we?
What we do know, however, is that not everyone is of the opinion that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should be in the Indian side just yet! Not yet, at least!
Many people believe that Vaibhav Suryavanshi is not yet ready for the Indian cricket team, despite his extraordinary IPL performances. While his talent is undeniable, rushing him into international cricket may not be the best decision for either the player or Indian cricket.
Former cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra recently explained why patience is necessary. According to him, India still has two years before the next T20 World Cup, which gives selectors enough time to groom young talents carefully.
The following are some of the noteworthy observations that the staunch observer of Indian cricket had made on Sooryavanshi-
“We are still 2 years away from the next World Cup. There will be time. Yes, it’s exciting. It’s something that is there which you cannot possibly ignore because IPL is India’s best T20 tournament. So if somebody is just breaking records, shattering records, you’ve got to take it seriously, and this kid is special. There’s no doubt about it. But then you just don’t make changes for the sake of making changes because somebody else has done well." “You’re talking about Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. You’re not replacing them right now because if you were to do that, I can give you in writing, in two or three years, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi goes through a bad patch, you’re going to follow the same principle."
He admitted that Suryavanshi’s record-breaking performances cannot be ignored because the IPL is India’s toughest T20 competition, but he also stressed that selections should not happen merely because a player has one outstanding season.
Chopra further pointed out that India already has established players like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson performing well. So, there is no need to rush Suryavanshi into the team immediately. If he is selected too early and later goes through a bad phase, people may start criticizing the selectors again. He also said that selectors like Ajit Agarkar, RP Singh, and Pragyan Ojha must think carefully about what is best for Indian cricket. Suryavanshi is a very talented player, but he is still young and has a long career ahead. Therefore, in a sense, drafting him after some time whilst giving him right now him more time and experience could help him become a better player for India in the future.
What do you reckon as cricket fans?
