A new twist has come with regards to whose decision was it to remove Suryakumar Yadav from the team. As per latest reports, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir pushed for a change in the India’s T20 leadership setup and was open to moving on from Suryakumar Yadav as captain following concerns over the batter’s form. Earlier this week, India named their squad for the England and Ireland series in which Shreyas Iyer was named as the captain and Suryakumar Yadav did not find a place in the team.
India won the 2026 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. They have also not lost a T20I series in his captaincy but his recent form was a real concern and IPL 2026 ultimately decided that the coach and selectors would move on from him.
Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan were the options Gambhir preferred
The report further claims that Gautam Gambhir favoured Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as potential candidates for the T20 captaincy. However, chief selector Ajith Agarkar strongly pushed for Shreyas Iyer.
One of the reasons was that if IPL performances and leadership credentials were to be the deciding factors, Shreyas Iyer was the standout contender. Ishan Kishan led the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in the first half of the IPL while Samson was not the captain for Chennai Super Kings and these went against them.
Suryakumar Yadav finds form in the T20 Mumbai 2026
Former Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav had a terrible Indian Premier League 2026 where he could just manage 270 runs. He also struggled throughout the T20 World Cup except the game against USA.
Days after being removed from the squad, Suryakumar Yadav made a point in the T20 Mumbai 2026 by smashing an unbeaten 72 to help his side get over the line. Suryakumar Yadav will be keen to put up the performances in the domestic circuit and look to find a way back in the side.
