Sri Lanka’s second Test against India in Colombo has produced another disciplinary issue, with Prabath Jayasuriya becoming the latest player sanctioned. The spinner was part of a tense final phase on Day 2, as Sri Lanka tried to stay in the contest against a dominant Indian side. India had earlier declared on 503/9, with Dhruv Jurel unbeaten on 115. Sri Lanka were then left facing a huge first-innings deficit. The pressure was already high after Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando were punished for their heated clash on the opening day. Jayasuriya’s punishment has now added another unwanted moment to an already eventful Test. 

Jayasuriya received an official reprimand and one demerit point after his dismissal on the final delivery of Day 2. The ICC found him in breach of Article 2.2 of its Code of Conduct. The rule covers the abuse of cricket equipment, ground equipment, fixtures and fittings during an international match. The left-arm spinner had been dismissed lbw by Manav Suthar for two runs from seven balls. While walking back towards the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat. Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. Therefore, no formal hearing was required. The demerit point is his first in a 24-month period. He is now the third player sanctioned during the Colombo Test.

Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be sanctioned during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo. The Sri Lankan spinner received an official reprimand and one demerit point after an incident following his dismissal. He was adjudged LBW by India’s Manav Suthar on the final ball of Day 2. Frustrated after his dismissal, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat while walking back to the dressing room. The ICC found him guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of its Code of Conduct. The rule covers the abuse of cricket equipment, ground equipment or fixtures during an international match. 

The ICC explained the earlier sanctions involving Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando. “Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).’” Both were fined 25 per cent of their match fees and received one demerit point each. Jayasuriya’s case was different, as it involved equipment after his dismissal. The ICC said, “Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be sanctioned for an incident during the second ICC World Test Championship contest against India after he was hit with an official reprimand following his dismissal in his side’s first innings.” He admitted the offence and accepted the sanction. This was his first offence in 24 months.
