India's 600th Test ended in victory as Shubman Gill's side beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle. The win gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and also extended their winning streak in Tests in Sri Lanka to six matches. Sri Lanka needed 372 to win after India set them a challenging target but the hosts were bowled out for 206 on the fifth day. Manav Suthar was key for India taking 6/55 in the second innings to complete a 10-wicket match haul. The win also added to India's impressive record against Sri Lanka. India have now won their last six Tests in Sri Lanka and are unbeaten against them in 11 consecutive Tests.
Sri Lanka's last Test victory over India came in 2015, when they won by 63 runs in Galle. That series ended with India fighting back to win 2-1 under Virat Kohli. India then returned to Sri Lanka in 2017 and completed a 3-0 series sweep. So they continue their dominance against the hosts after winning the first match of the series. The Rajasthan spinner stole the show, as he took four wickets in the first innings before returning with six on the final day. In only his second Test, he finished with 10 wickets and played the biggest role in closing out India's 600th Test.
India win by 165 runs Win After Sri Lanka’s Late Collapse
India were in control for most of the Test but Sri Lanka still had to fight as they began the final day at 84/4. Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva had put together a useful partnership and kept the hopes alive for a while. The left hander had moved to 84 and Sri Lanka were hoping he could stay long enough to take the game deep into the day. The left-arm spinner struck in the 76th over after getting extra bounce as Dinusha attempted to work the ball away but he could only glove it to Dhruv Jurel at leg gully.
Prabath Jayasuriya fell first ball, beaten by a delivery that drifted in and clipped the top of off stump. Lahiru Kumara survived the hat-trick ball, but Suthar soon found his edge in the last ball of the over as Sri Lanka lost three wickets in a single over.
Sri Lanka were all out for 206 and India got a 165-run win. The win was India’s fifth victory in 10 matches this WTC edition, a first their win over the West Indies in Ahmedabad last October. India had since lost two home Tests against South Africa in Kolkata and Guwahati in November 2025 and won the one-off Test outside the WTC assignments in June this year. India’s points percentage improved from 48.14 to 53.33 but they still remain fifth on the standings behind Australia (77.77), South Africa (75.00), New Zealand (72.22), and Bangladesh (66.67).
