The Indian cricket team is currently finalizing critical preparation plans for its highly anticipated red-ball tour to the island nation next month. According to prominent sports journalist Kushan Sarkar, the national selectors and management are arranging a crucial warm-up fixture to be played locally ahead of the official bilateral series.
This preparatory match is deemed essential for the squad to get used to the distinct subcontinental pitch conditions, spin-friendly environments, and high humidity levels. It also offers the players a valuable opportunity to rediscover their red-ball rhythm and experiment with tactical combinations before entering formal, high-pressure international competition.
This upcoming tour marks India's first formal Test series visit to Sri Lanka since 2017 and carries immense weight for the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. The official bilateral schedule features a two-match series, opening with the first Test from August 15 to August 19, 2026, at the iconic Galle International Cricket Stadium. The action will then shift to Colombo for the second Test from August 23 to August 27, 2026, hosted at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, with both matches scheduled for a 10:00 AM IST start.
Led by captain Shubman Gill, a successful tour is absolutely vital for India to secure crucial championship points, move up from their current fifth-place spot on the WTC leaderboard, and keep their qualification hopes alive for the grand final.

India's packed schedule forces postponement of Sri Lanka white-ball series to December
Initial discussions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) explored adding a three-match T20I fundraising series to the August 2026 tour itinerary. This proposed white-ball addition was intended to generate critical relief funds to support humanitarian recovery efforts following the catastrophic devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. However, the official release confirmed that no white-ball fixtures will take place during this August window due to India's heavily congested international calendar.

Inserting a limited-overs series into the tight schedule proved logistically unfeasible, as the Indian team must balance workload management and prioritize their vital red-ball preparations for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship matches. To accommodate this change, both cricket boards successfully rescheduled the limited-overs encounters for a later date.
Sri Lanka will instead travel to India in December 2026 for a separate, dedicated white-ball tour featuring a three-match One Day International (ODI) series and a three-match T20I series. This formal adjustment ensures that fans will still witness plenty of exciting short-format action between the two subcontinental rivals while preserving the competitive integrity and focus of the high-stakes August Test tour.
