The Indian women's cricket team has qualified for the LA2028 Summer Olympics and it is a monumental achievement for the sport. Despite India being handed an early exit in the 2026 ICC T20I World Cup, the Indian women’s cricket side locked in their Olympic spot. Under the ICC's newly unveiled system, the highest-placed eligible finisher from the four major continents at the 2026 World Cup would guarantee their spot in the Olympics. India finished as the best performing team from Asia and that helped the side cement their spot in the upcoming Olympics.

Along with India, just three other nations have booked their spots for the women's tournament as they have been the best performing sides from their respective continents. Australia qualified from Oceania, South Africa qualified from Africa and England booked their spot as the best performing team from Europe. Harmanpreet Kaur and her side would be delighted with qualifying into the tournament as it would be a dream come true for the Women in Blue. The Indian women's cricket team would be confident in making their mark in the tournament as it would be a historic moment for cricket itself.

Harmanpreet Kaur's side eyes historic gold medal

In the 2028 Summer Olympics, both men's and women's cricketing events has a strict limit of 6 teams in the tournament. Each nation would have to pick 15-member squads going into the tournament. From the remaining spots, the 5th spot would be reserved for the USA as they are the hosts. However the rule would only come into effect, if their team breaks into the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If they don't, the spot would go to the next highest-ranked non-qualified nation on the global rankings. The final spot would be decided via a brand-new ICC Olympics Qualifier tournament in 2027, featuring eight nations fighting for the last spot in the event.

The Indian women's cricket team would have been disappointed with their result in the 2026 ICC Women's T20I World Cup. They would be determined to make an impact in the Olympics as it is the first time that cricket has been added to the sporting events. In a recent interview, Harmanpreet Kaur stated that she used to dream of moments like these and that they would be excited to prepare for the event. The Olympics is one of those stages where people remember the performances when a side would perform well. India recently scripted history with their triumph in the 2025 ICC Women's ODI World Cup and that was a historical achievement for the side.

India’s qualification into the 2028 LA Olympics would be a huge opportunity for Harmanpreet Kaur and her women to earn a medal in the most celebrated sporting event. India aren’t amongst those countries who consistently win gold medals and this time out, the Women in Blue will be presented with a golden opportunity to secure the Gold medal for India.
