The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been unfair for Iran on many grounds and FIFA let politics win over football in this instance. The treatment of the Iran side was poor in the tournament with too many restrictions laid on the team. They were forced to relocate their training base at the last moment and that caused too many logistical issues for the side. Every other competing country had a fair bit of relaxation in their movement between the venues but Iran were treated poorly with travel restrictions. Ahead of high-stakes matches, the logistical hurdles overburdened Iran and that caused lapses in their training sessions. FIFA had to ensure that Iran was treated just like any other side in the tournament but they failed to do justice to the side.
The elimination of Iran from the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be gut wrenching for the supporters as they missed out on the narrowest of margins. They hit the woodwork and missed penalties on too many occasions and they weren’t just able to grab the opportunity that was presented to them. Amidst all the growing frustration, Iran was the immediate forced departure of the team to Tijuana due to restrictive visa regulations imposed by the host nation. FIFA failed to uphold the principle of universal accessibility and Iran became a victim of absolute political hypocrisy from the host nation.

Iran questions FIFA’s commitment to fair competition
Prior to the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there were talks regarding how the USA could accommodate Iran amidst the growing tensions between the countries. On the eve of the tournament, FIFA declared that they had no authority over sovereign governments and police forces and that the final power rested with the respective government. However, this contradicted the rule of FIFA that promised every competing nation unhindered access to all the venues and that was the start of the misery for Iran.
Iran was forced to relocate its training camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico because of travel restrictions. Sometimes, Iran entered into the U.S. for matches, arriving just 15 hours before the match and that impacted their preparatory sessions. Such late movements deprive the players from recovery time and the training sessions ahead of the important fixtures. Over 15 essential members of Iran's coaching and administrative staff, as well as several players, were denied U.S. visas.
Iran was ultimately eliminated from the tournament as luck did not favour the side on many occasions. They scored a late stoppage-time goal against Egypt in their group stage finale but it was controversially denied by VAR. Then the hopes were pinned on the clash between Austria and Algeria, which gave Iran an emotional roller-coaster. Algeria scored a late goal against Austria to take the lead and that would have meant that Iran went through to the Round of 32. However, in the very last kick of the game, Austria hit back a stunning goal in the last minute of injury time and the World Cup dream came to an abrupt end for Iran.
If a prominent, top-20 ranked nation can have its World Cup dream compromised by hosting geopolitics, then it does mean that political hypocrisy exists in the sport as well. FIFA ignoring its fundamental principles for the host-nation would be unacceptable for the fans and Iran surely should have treated better to ensure that they could have given their best on the field in every game.
