Rishabh Pant was out the previous evening for an unfortunate single digit score. He couldn’t even last ten odd deliveries in the contest against Delhi Capitals in his Lucknow side’s campaign opener. But then those are the oddities of cricket. One game, you score runs and the other, you miss out.
However what was perhaps also odd was the sight of him opening the batting for his side.
Wasn’t it?
But post his team’s sad loss in their campaign opener against Delhi, the Lucknow Captain has offered some clarity on the subject of his opening the batting for his IPL unit.
Rishabh Pant has hinted at flexibility regarding his batting position for IPL 2026, saying the decision on whether he will open remains “50-50”, but made it clear that he is set to feature in the top order.
Pant suggested that while the exact role could vary depending on team strategy and match situations, he is comfortable taking on responsibility at the top.
His aggressive approach makes him a strong option either as an opener or in the No. 3 slot, giving his side added dynamism in the powerplay.

The wicketkeeper-batter also indicated that the team management could take a situational call, keeping combinations and opposition in mind, but his presence in the top order is almost certain throughout the season.
That said, the 2026 season is the maiden captaincy stint for Pant as captain of his team and he will be looking to make inroads towards success. Let us see what the next games bring Lucknow.
