In what can be called a significant blow of sorts for the women’s team of Ireland currently contesting in the epochal event in all of the women’s game, i.e., the 2026 T20 World Cup (in England and Wales), Ireland’s right arm medium fast Ava Canning has been ruled out of the competition. Thus far, she only played a single contest which happened to be Ireland’s World Cup opener against Scotland. In what was a disappointing loss for the Irish side that went down by a margin of 40 runs, a significant margin if you were to think of it in terms of 20-over cricket, Canning emerged with a brilliant bowling spell.

She removed Katherine Fraser, Kathryn Brace and Alisa Lister. The Scottish captain had top scored for the side.

In her own right, Canning is a considerably talented all rounder for Ireland whose useful batting down the order tends to produce vital runs for the side. She’s also right next to 797 runs for the Irish national side and sits on the verge of touching 1,000 runs in the format, a hugely pivotal landmark.

All of 20 years of age, Ava Canning has suffered a stress fracture of the back and what’s more? It has been reported that Jane Maguire is going to replace the talented right arm fast medium in the Gaby Lewis-led squad.

However, why Canning’s absence is also going to specifically matter is that she has a tendency of maintaining a sort of light over free scoring. It’s not easy to score off wildly against the fast bowler !

Even in the contest that was held at Manchester, in which Ava Canning took a useful 3-for, one of the only few positives in their opening contest in this year’s World Cup, she emerged with an economy rate of 6.5. And that’s that!

Where it stands at the moment, then the Ireland women’s side are desperately searching for a win. They’ve gone down to Scotland and not too long after, the co-hosts, England. What should matter to them and urgently is the sheer lack of runs that the team is able to score, rather not score, to speak specifically! They emerged with a sub par score against the Nat Sciver-Brunt led side and against the likes of Windies women and the White Ferns, they ought to lift their batting standards.

A curricula factor in this regard will have to be the batting form of Gaby Lewis, who has in excess of 3,000 runs in the format. So far, the exceptionally talented batter hasn’t been among the runs. A lot of the bulwark of the team’s scoring is, therefore, down to Orla Prendergast.

But where it stands right now, then Ava Canning’s absence is going to hurt the side a great deal.
