The Indian Test squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour is likely to be announced next week. As per reports from Times of India, the selectors are closely monitoring the fitness of several key players including Jasprit Bumrah. While Ravindra Jadeja's availability remains uncertain, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana are also racing against time to recover from their respective injuries.

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been sidelined since suffering a tennis elbow during IPL 2026, and the BCCI has not yet provided an official update on his recovery. Washington Sundar missed the third ODI against England because of a hamstring injury, with Harsh Dubey replacing him in the squad. Harshit Rana also picked up a hamstring injury midway through the T20I series in England after recently returning from a lengthy layoff due to a knee injury that had ruled him out of both the IPL and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The fitness of Jadeja and Washington could influence the overall balance of India's squad, particularly given Sri Lanka's spin friendly conditions. Their absence may open the door for off-spinning all-rounder Saransh Jain, who impressed for India A against Sri Lanka A in Galle by taking six wickets across the match and scoring an unbeaten 70 in the first innings.

Jasprit Bumrah expected to be fit for Sri Lanka Tests; Nitish Reddy likely to miss out

As per reports from Times of India, selectors are also expected to receive an update on Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the third ODI against England at Lord's after sustaining an impact injury to his left knee during the previous match in Cardiff. The decision to rest him was precautionary, and the fast bowler is expected to recover in time for the Sri Lanka series. He featured extensively in the T20 World Cup and IPL playing all the matches and the team management is expected to continue managing his workload ahead of a demanding Test schedule. Bumrah had also been rested for the Afghanistan series and the T20Is against Ireland and England.

However all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is unlikely to be available after being sidelined with a quadriceps injury that forced him to miss the Ireland and England tours. Barring the injury concerns, the rest of the Test squad is expected to remain largely unchanged. KL Rahul is likely to partner Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order, while captain Shubman Gill is set to bat at No. 4. Sai Sudharsan appears poised to retain his place after consistent performances for India A, with Devdutt Padikkal also in the selection mix. Rishabh Pant is expected to continue as the first-choice wicketkeeper, with Dhruv Jurel serving as his backup.

If fit, Bumrah is expected to spearhead the pace attack alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Gurnoor Brar has also strengthened his credentials after a standout performance for India A against Sri Lanka A, where he claimed 10 wickets in the second four-day match. The left-arm seamer had earlier made his senior India debut during the ODI series against Afghanistan.

In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are likely to lead the attack, while left-arm spinner Manav Suthar is expected to retain his place following his impressive seven-wicket haul on Test debut against Afghanistan. Harsh Dubey could also earn a spot in the squad if either Jadeja or Washington fails to regain fitness.

India's two-match Test series against Sri Lanka begins on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test scheduled to start on August 23 at the SSC in Colombo. However, the Indian squad will reach Sri Lanka by August 4 and is scheduled to play a four-day match at the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo to acclimatise to the conditions. But it remains to be seen whether Bumrah can travel with the squad in the first week of August.

The tour marks India's first Test assignment of the new World Test Championship cycle following their 2-0 home series defeat to South Africa in November. Prior to that, India drew the five-Test series in England 2-2 and completed a 2-0 home sweep over West Indies. They currently sit fifth in the WTC standings, one place above Sri Lanka in sixth.
