Mirabai Chanu clinched India's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after producing a dominant display in the women's 48kg weightlifting event on Sunday, July 26, in Glasgow. The triumph marked the Manipuri star's third Commonwealth Games gold, having previously topped the podium in the 49kg category at the 2018 and 2022 editions. She had also won a silver medal at the 2014 Games in Glasgow.

The 31-year-old began her campaign by lifting a Commonwealth and Games record 85kg in the snatch before setting another Games record with a 105kg effort in the clean and jerk. Her combined total of 190kg was enough to comfortably secure the gold medal.

The victory also gave India their second medal in weightlifting and third overall at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following Rishikanta Singh's silver in the men's 60kg category.

Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed the silver medal, while Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry settled for bronze. Mirabai's gold lifted India to seventh place in the overall medal standings.

Rishikanta Singh wins silver as India's medal charge gathers pace

Earlier in the day, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam opened India's account with a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event, securing the nation's second medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

He set a Games record of 121kg in the snatch before lifting 143kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 264kg. After a relatively quiet start to the campaign over the opening three days, India's medal hopes gathered momentum as the weightlifting competition got underway, with Mirabai Chanu leading the country's charge on Sunday.

India's campaign had begun with para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar winning bronze on the second day, while another medal is already assured after boxer Lovlina Borgohain advanced directly to the women's 75kg semifinals with a first-round bye. Mirabai Chanu helped India get their first gold at the Commonwealth Games 2026 and made the day even better.
