Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra faces a challenging contest as he returns to the Commonwealth Games after an eight-year absence. He described the men’s javelin competition in Glasgow as “tough” due to the presence of multiple World, Olympic and Asian champions. Speaking before the men’s javelin event, Chopra highlighted the quality of the field and stated that every throw would be critical.
“The field is quite good, and I think there is very tough competition in javelin because there are many World Championship golds, many Olympic gold medallists are also there and Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medallists as well. So it’s going to be quite tough competition, and almost everyone performs in Diamond Leagues too, so everyone will get to see a good competition,” Neeraj told the media on Sunday.

The weather conditions in Glasgow, particularly wind, may affect the competition as athletes trained under challenging conditions. Neeraj Chopra emphasised the importance of mental resilience, saying, “Yes, wind conditions are a bit tough, but it comes down to the fact that it’s for everyone. But it’s just that no matter how bad the conditions are, we have to stay a bit mentally strong.”
The Javelin competition includes defending Commonwealth champion and Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, Grenada’s former world champion Anderson Peters, Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, and Sri Lanka’s world leader Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage. India will also be represented by Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh along with Neeraj Chopra.

India enjoyed a productive day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Mirabai Chanu clinching the country's first gold medal of the campaign in the women's 48kg weightlifting event. The Olympic medallist produced a record-breaking performance, lifting a total of 190kg to claim her third Commonwealth Games gold.

Earlier, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam added a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event. He set a Games record of 121kg in the snatch and finished with a combined lift of 264kg. The two weightlifting medals gave India a timely boost in the overall medal standings as the campaign gathered momentum. The men’s javelin qualification round is scheduled for July 30 at Scotstoun Stadium, with the medal event set for the following day as Neeraj aims to secure a second Commonwealth Games gold medal.
