The culture of cricket is rising and perhaps perpetually so where it comes to the African continent. Yes, you read that right . As a matter of fact, no more are teams such as South Africa and Zimbabwe, easily two of the most recognised and famous teams from the said continent are the only ones that are playing the sport. The cricketing fever has actually spread to other parts of the huge African continent as well and it could be said that the ever popular appeal of the sport has led to this viral wave of growing popularity.

Having said that, a country that has most recently opened a sprawling brand new facility in its midst, then the same happens to be there at Tanzania.

Having said that let’s ask a simple and rather uncomplicated question. Just how many of us would have, for instance, though for even a minute say a decade ago that a country otherwise known for its brilliant wildlife scene and tourism spectre would have one day in its midst a brand new cricketing facility.  

But then truth be told, implicit in the rise of the global popularity of the sport thanks to spectacles such as the shortest format of the game; more and more nations, it has been noted, have woken up to the cricketing fiesta. Similarly, we’ve seen the rapid rise of cricket in nations as diverse and otherwise so football centric such as Brazil, Hungary, Germany and even Switzerland and Austria.

But for now, it’s Tanzania’s chance and the country’s time to grow the cricketing fever even further.

Most recently, the newly opened cricketing facility was inaugurated by a gaggle of redoubtably popular and noted personalities associated in the game and the main act in the opening ceremony of the same revolved around a certain Jay Shah, the venerable ICC president. A hugely positive step in the direction of further cultivating the culture of Cricket in the African nation, also present during the said occasion were noted stars such as the former great fast bowler and all time Proteas legend Allan Donald.

Joining Mr. Shah on the official stage were Prof. William A.L. Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam; Ms Neema Msitha, Secretary General of the National Sports Council, and Dr B.S. Sreekumar, Chairman of the Tanzania Cricket Association.

The inauguration took place just days before Tanzania hosts the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B 2026 from 8 to 18 August, with the TCA Arena serving as the principal venue for the competition.  The journey towards completion of the TCA Arena began in October 2024, when the University of Dar es Salaam allocated land for the project.
