Five years ago today, India pulled off one of their greatest Test wins overseas. They beat England by 151 runs at Lord’s and went 1-0 up in the series. It was a proper roller coaster from the start. India made 364 in the first innings, built around KL Rahul’s calm 129. England replied with 391, Joe Root carrying his bat for a brilliant unbeaten 180. The hosts had a slender 27-run lead and looked in control.
India’s second innings was falling away until Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, batting at eight and nine, put on an unbroken 89 for the ninth wicket. Shami finished 56 not out, Bumrah 34 not out. India declared on 298 for 8, setting England 272 to win with roughly 60 overs left in the day. Most people expected a draw.
What followed was pure chaos. Bumrah and Siraj knocked over the openers early. Then the rest of the attack with Shami, Ishant, Siraj again just kept coming. England never settled. Wickets tumbled. Siraj finished with four, and England were all out for 120.
From nowhere, India had a 151-run win. Rahul’s hundred, Root’s epic, that unlikely Shami-Bumrah stand, and a ruthless final-day bowling performance. One of those Tests that had everything, and still feels special years later and it was a memorable game.
