Joe Root has outlined his vision after returning as England's Test captain, insisting he wants to build on the success of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum rather than make sweeping changes. In an interview with the ECB, Joe Root also revealed that head coach Stephen Fleming played a major role in convincing him to take on the role once again.
Root, who returns to a familiar role after captaining England in 65 Test matches between 2017 and 2022, said his priority is to retain the positive changes introduced under Stokes and McCullum while making small improvements to help the side compete consistently against the world's best teams. "It’ll be trying to continue some of the good things we have done over that period (since 2022) and not finding ourselves back to where we were before Baz and Ben took over."
"Evolving and tweaking things to get us to where we want to be and really competing against the top nations consistently over a long period of time."
The 35-year-old stressed that England would be wrong to abandon the philosophy that transformed the team's fortunes over the past four years, adding that there are only a few areas that need refinement."There’s so much good stuff that Ben and Brendon did and changed the way we look at the game and see the game."
"I’ve benefitted hugely from that as a player so to think we have to start all over again would be wrong. But there are areas we want to sharpen up a little bit and become a little bit sterner with," he added."The last four years is the most fun I’ve had in cricket and most of that is down to the way they got me to see the game. Clearly the last little while is fresh in everyone’s minds but you’re looking at a four-year period where we did a lot of good things."

Root also admitted that newly appointed England Test head coach Stephen Fleming was a key factor behind his decision to accept the captaincy. "If I’m being brutally honest, he was a big reason why I wanted to do it. I’m very excited by the way he sees the game and where he sees us sit as a team and the work we have to do to get where we want to get to. Very much looking forward to working with him and looking forward to us building something special together."
As a player Fleming was New Zealand’s longest-serving (80 Tests) and most successful Test captain (28 wins). He played for Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire where also enjoyed success in captaining Notts to a drought-breaking County Championship title in 2005.
The 53-year-old led CSK to a record five Indian Premier League titles as a coach and reached the final 10 times. Fleming also led Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men's competition in 2023, and has coached CSK’s affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA as well as the Melbourne Stars.
Fleming will not be in charge for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick set to serve as interim head coach when the series gets underway at Headingley on August 19. He is due to arrive in the UK later in the summer to begin preparations for England's winter tour of South Africa.
