Former Australia head coach Justin Langer is no longer in contention to become England's next Test head coach, according to the latest reports. Instead, former England batter Jonathan Trott and the ECB's current managing director of men's cricket Richard Gould have emerged as the leading names under consideration as England look for a successor to Brendon McCullum.

Earlier reports had suggested that Langer was at the top of the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) shortlist. However, more recent updates indicate that the ECB has moved in a different direction, with Langer no longer being actively considered for the role.

Jonathan Trott, who has built a strong coaching reputation in recent years, is now among the frontrunners for the position. Richard Gould has also been linked as a serious contender as the ECB weighs up its options before England's upcoming home Test series against Pakistan in August.

Andy Flower declines England head coach role

Ever since the England coaching role became vacant after Brendon McCullum was relieved of his duties following England's 2-1 Test series defeat to New Zealand, former Zimbabwe captain and ex-England coach Andy Flower was reportedly sounded out by the ECB. Flower is understood to have declined the opportunity, prompting the board to continue its search for a new head coach.

The ECB is expected to finalise its appointment before England's Test series against Pakistan begins in August. McCullum ended his tenure with a record of 27 wins, two draws and 20 defeats in Tests. Following England's recent changes, Ben Stokes has also announced his retirement from Test cricket, with Harry Brook emerging as the leading candidate to take over the captaincy.
