Former England international cricketers Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior have publicly thrown their weight behind their ex-teammate Jonathan Trott to become England's new Men’s Test head coach. Following the sacking of Brendon McCullum, the hunt for a red-ball specialist has intensified, leading both high-profile figures to voice their support on social media.
Pietersen, tweeting from his verified profile, gave a ringing endorsement by listing Trott’s defining attributes, "Jonathan Trott: Hard working, Dedicated, Great cricket brain, Emotionally intelligent, Done cricket the hard way, Respected. Hopefully he's a front runner for England red ball team."

This absolute character validation has emphasized Trott's deep-rooted respect within the cricketing community.Shortly after, Matt Prior seconded this choice via his profile, looking at the structural options available to the ECB after Andy Flower withdrew from consideration. Prior tweeted, "Now Flower isnt available I'd have Trott. Really like the idea of Langer (he would certainly sort the mentality side of things) but would be nice to have one of our own coaching the England team. Trott knows how to win in Australia, India, & what it takes to be #1 in Test cricket"

Prior's endorsement underlined Trott’s tactical pedigree and international triumph layout, highlighting that his proven experience in winning challenging overseas tours makes him the ideal homegrown choice to restore the national team to the top of the ICC Test rankings.

"I don't know what the future holds": Jonathan Trott on his coaching future amidst his appointment as Ireland Cricket’s consultant
Jonathan Trott has officially joined Cricket Ireland in a short-term consultancy role, right as intensive speculation links him to England’s vacant Men's Test head coaching position. The former England top-order batter, who accumulated 13 international centuries, will spend 14 days working with the Irish squad. His primary objective will center on supporting strategic planning and player development for the upcoming five-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan, starting August 5.
Cricket Ireland’s performance director Graeme West emphasized that Trott's extensive insider knowledge is highly valuable. Trott wrapped up a highly successful stint as Afghanistan's head coach in February and he previously guided them to a historic first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final in the 2024 T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies . When questioned about potentially taking over the England reins following Brendon McCullum's departure previously during the post match conference after Afghanistan defeated Canada by 82 runs, Trott stated, "I'm not going to let you put words in my mouth, but, you know, I've really enjoyed this. I don't know what the future holds. Maybe I have a couple of days off and see how it goes.”
Simultaneously, Trott has been heavily featured on the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) nine-man shortlist to replace McCullum. While his former international teammates Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior have actively campaigned for him to assume the England role, this brief technical role in Dublin will keep his analytical skills sharp.
