In an exclusive interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI) on July 18, 2026, former national manager Stephen Constantine launched a scathing critique of Indian football, declaring that the country’s football ecosystem is in "freefall" due to systemic mismanagement by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Currently steering the Rwanda national team, the 63-year-old Englishman expressed profound disappointment over being overlooked for the vacant Indian head coach role in favor of local manager Khalid Jamil.
Constantine stated, "I should have been India coach," pointing out his extensive international resume against Jamil's lack of national-team experience. "They appointed someone who has zero experience in coaching a national team. It's a joke," he added, directly questioning the federation's appointment criteria. Constantine, who previously guided India to a historic high of 96 in the FIFA rankings, argued that the sport has regressed into a chaotic state following the expiration of the AIFF's key partnership agreement with the Indian Super League (ISL).
He emphasized that the country cannot harbor World Cup ambitions without severe structural adjustments. To arrest this decline, Constantine demanded immediate reforms, "Until and unless you introduce promotion and relegation, and proper youth development, Indian football will not grow." Furthermore, he condemned the political undercurrents plaguing the dressing room, asserting that senior players should have no voice in choosing administrative staff or national managers.
For Constantine, the current state of Indian football is a painful regression, and he firmly believes his proven track record makes him the rightful leader to stabilize the program.
"We are not dominating the SAFF region": Stephen Constantine gives reality check on World Cup dream
Former India head coach Stephen Constantine has openly slammed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) after being bypassed for the top job. During an interview with PTI, he criticized the federation's choice by highlighting Jamil's lack of credentials, pointing out the decision to hire a manager with "zero experience at international football".Constantine heavily targeted India's immediate aspirations for the global stage, calling the dream of qualifying for the World Cup highly premature under current circumstances.

Recalling a previous conversation with former AIFF president Praful Patel, the Englishman revealed his candid response to institutional ambitions, "When I came to India the second time and Mr. Patel said to me, coach, how do we go to the World Cup? And I said, sir, we are not dominating the SAAF region. How are we going to qualify for the World Cup?" He emphasized that India has fundamental, regional benchmarks to achieve long before looking at the global tournament, noting, "We haven't been to the Asian Cup on merit for a very long time. How are we going to qualify for the World Cup?"
Constantine concluded that administrative expectations remain completely detached from reality, delivering a strict reality check to the national federation: "First, you've got to qualify for the Asian Cup on a regular basis. You've got to dominate the SAFF region on a regular basis. If you're not doing those two things, you are not going to the World Cup even if they put 100 teams".
