A chaotic collision and miscommunication ended in run-out for Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 1 of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India in Galle on Saturday. India won the toss and opted to bat first and the surface was excellent for batting. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul started really well as the pair put on a fifty run partnership. Things were cruising for India before a brain fade moment which saw Jaiswal being run-out. The incident happened when Keshara Nuwantha bowled a flighted delivery on the stumps and Rahul drove it neatly towards mid-on. Nuwantha dived to stop the ball but could not prevent it from getting away.
KL Rahul wanted the run but the Sri Lankan spinner collided with Jaiswal who was at the non-striker's end. The left-hander lost his footing and ended up on the floor. Despite that he got back to his feet in a bid to complete the run, by then it was too late and both batters were stranded at the non-striker end. The 24 year old departed for 32 and was disappointed with the way things panned out. India were going really well and this was a huge blow to them.
Devdutt Padikkal smashes maiden Test century in Galle, KL Rahul walks off with cramps
India had consolidated well and did not lose any wicket in the second session. The Karnataka duo looked confident and did not give many chances. Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul played knocks of unbeaten 84 and 77 respectively as India reached a commanding 197 for one at tea on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka here on Saturday. However soon after tea, Indian opener KL Rahul had to retire hurt at 77 (162). The right-hander came out late from the session break after Tea but left after what seemed like quite severe cramps in both of his hands. Indian captain Shubman Gill walked out to replace KL Rahul as the visitors look to post a big total on the board.
Rahul who reached fifty in 127 balls looked really patient and applied himself well. It was an unfortunate moment for him to go out and there is no confirmation yet on his availability. The conditions at Galle are really good for batting and India will be looking to post a big total. Devdutt Padikkal continued his blistering form as he smashed his maiden Test century. The stylish left-hand batter reached the milestone in 134 balls. He also became the second left-hander to score a Test hundred from No.3 for India in the 21st century, after Sourav Ganguly, who’d scored 136 against Zimbabwe in Delhi in 2002.
