He was seen struggling with his hands and limping before eventually leaving the field with the team physiotherapist. His departure ended an important partnership and brought Shubman Gill to the crease alongside Padikkal. The Indian vice-captain’s 77 had provided stability against Sri Lanka’s spin-heavy attack and helped the visitors establish a strong platform. His fitness will now be closely monitored by India’s medical team as the Test progresses.

India end Day 1 on 288/2 as Devdutt Padikkal’s century puts Sri Lanka under pressure

India finished the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in a commanding position at Galle. After winning the toss, captain Shubman Gill chose to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal made a brisk 32 before a bizarre run-out ended his innings. KL Rahul then joined Devdutt Padikkal and steadied the innings with a crucial 150-run partnership. The experienced opener scored a patient 77 from 162 balls, hitting nine fours and one six. However, he was forced to retire after suffering severe cramps. 

Padikkal took complete advantage of the opportunity and produced a magnificent maiden Test century. The elegant left-hander remained unbeaten on 131 from 178 deliveries, with 12 fours and one six. His assured knock helped India maintain control after Rahul’s departure. Gill then made 16 before being dismissed by Prabath Jayasuriya, giving Sri Lanka their second breakthrough. Rishabh Pant joined Padikkal and ensured India did not lose momentum late in the day. The aggressive wicketkeeper-batter remained unbeaten on 27 from 36 balls.
