Indian speedster Mohammed Shami picked the favorite Indian captain he has played under and it is neither MS Dhoni nor Rohit Sharma. Shami, who continues to remain out of action since the Champions Trophy 2025, recently appeared in an interview where he chose his favourite Indian captain. To everyone’s surprise it was neither Dhoni nor Sharma, but legendary batter Virat Kohli who proved to be India’s most successful Test captain.
Shami was speaking to Times Now Navbharat, where he said that every captain that he has played alongside had a different approach towards the team. Ultimately, he chose Kohli as the captain he has enjoyed playing under the most. Not only this, but the veteran bowler also highlighted the personal bond with Kohli and revealed how the former skipper trusted his bowlers by giving them freedom to go with their own plans.
“Overall, I enjoy more with Virat as I have a good bond and better connection with him, you can call it like a brother or a good friend,” Shami stated. Speaking about Dhoni and Sharma’s approach, Shami labelled Dhoni as a calm leader who would intervene whenever necessary, while portraying Sharma with a clear vision.
“Mahi bhai (Dhoni) had a different way. He would be calm, and where he felt something was not needed, it would not be needed. With Rohit, it was different, if he wanted something at a particular time, he wanted just that. With Virat, I could convince him about my plan. He would stop and give you that freedom until you did not make any mistake,” Shami added.

Mohammed Shami’s childhood coach Mohammed Badruddin shared a stern message regarding the fast bowler and said that the bowler still has cricket left in him. Notably, despite delivering consistent performances for Bengal, the 35-year-old has been looked over in the recent squads and is no longer a part of BCCI’s central contract list. However, Shami has repeatedly insisted that he has no plans of retiring and is determined to make a comeback in the Indian setup.
Amidst all this, Shami’s coach has sent a stern message to the BCCI selectors and said that the bowler is determined for the next season. "Shami's mood is positive. He is quite motivated for the next season," Badruddin told India Today. "He still has cricket left. He is ready, and if the country needs him, he will be ready to serve," he added.
"India did not bowl well in England, where the fast bowlers get a lot of help. Shami could have been really useful there. It is not easy to bowl in South Africa. You need experience there," he spoke about India’s questionable performance in England.
