New Zealand Cricket has proposed the launch of a new franchise-based NZ20 league, set to replace the long-running Super Smash tournament as part of a major overhaul of the country’s domestic T20 structure.

The proposed competition is aimed at aligning New Zealand with other leading cricket nations that operate franchise-based leagues, with the goal of boosting commercial revenue, increasing global visibility, and attracting top international talent.

Under the plan, the NZ20 league would move away from the current system of teams owned by regional associations and instead adopt privately owned franchises.

This shift is expected to open up investment opportunities and create a more market-driven competition.

New Zealand Cricket is also believed to be exploring a possible window in the global calendar that would allow the league to attract overseas players without clashing with major international tournaments. The Super Smash, which has been New Zealand’s premier domestic T20 competition for nearly two decades, has struggled to match the scale and financial success of leagues such as the Indian Premier League and Australia’s Big Bash League.

Officials see the NZ20 as a step toward making the domestic game more competitive and financially sustainable in the long term.

Discussions are currently ongoing with stakeholders, including the six major domestic associations, players, and potential investors. Key details such as the number of teams, ownership model, broadcast rights, and scheduling are yet to be finalised.
