On this day, February 14, 2021: West Indies beat Bangladesh to clinch their first overseas win in four years. It was a second-string West Indies side with many first-choice players pulling out of the tour due to Covid fears had they created history as they chased 395 to win in the first Test. In the second test they prevented Bangladesh from chasing a target 231 and defended brilliantly. One of the star player was off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall, who finished with nine wickets in the game. As many as 17 wickets fell on a deteriorating day-four pitch as Bangladesh made a push to level the series but they fell short by 18 in the end.
West Indies were batting first and posted 409 as Nkrumah Bonner, Joshua da Silva and Alzarri Joseph all made more than 80 runs each. It was a terrific score while batting first from West Indies. Abu Jayed and Taijul Islam picked up four wickets each as West Indies were right on top after the first innings. In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 296. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan scored half centuries but there really was no other contribution from any batters as they were restricted to that total. For the West Indies, it was Rahkeem Cornwall who picked up five wickets and did all the damage.
West Indies took the lead and were in a strong position but they were really bad in the third innings as they were bowled out just 117. Bangladesh bowlers made a stunning comeback with the three spinners picking up eight wickets among them. They made a good come back but still had to go and get the runs in the fourth innings and it was always going to be tricky.
Bangladesh were chasing a target of 231 to level the series and they got a very good start from the openers who put up a partnership of 59 runs. They were 70/1 at one stage and the chase was looking comfortable but the West Indian spinners came to the party with Cornwall picking up four wickets and Warrican along with Brathwaite picking up three wickets each as Bangladesh collapsed and were bowled out for 213 handing over a closely fought win to West Indies.
