On this day, March 25,2025: Shreyas Iyer sets the tone for PBKS with a captain’s knock against GT. The year 2025 saw Punjab Kings reach the final and eventually lose to RCB. It was a very good season for them as they were consistent throughout the season. It all started in their opening match of the season against Gujarat Titans. They were playing away from home and Punjab Kings were batting first and put up a massive score on the board.
Punjab Kings lost Prabhsimran Singh early in the game and Shreyas Iyer, the new captain of Punjab walked in at number three and made his intentions clear. Shreyas started counter attacking and Punjab Kings were going at a good rate. Priyansh Arya who was making his IPL debut started really well and scored 47 before getting dismissed. Punjab Kings lost their second wicket with 79 on the board in less than seven overs.
In a span of an over, Punjab Kings lost two quick wickets with Omarzai and Maxwell getting dismissed. It was Shreyas Iyer who carried on and went past his half-century. Punjab Kings had a great finish with the likes of Stoinis and Shashank Singh playing useful cameos. Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 97 at the end of the first innings as Punjab Kings put up a massive total of 243/5. It was a tough night for the GT bowlers.
Gujarat Titans did well in the chase and were in the game for long enough before eventually falling short. Sai Sudharshan and Jos Buttler smashed fifties for GT but the rest of the batters could not do much as they fell behind in the chase. Sherfane Rutherford tried his best with 46 runs but it was not enough in the end as Gujarat Titans finished with 232/5 and fell short by 11 runs. Shreyas Iyer was the player of the match and had set the tone for their campaign with this performance.
