Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar who returned to the county for Championship stint has now been registered for the One-Day Cup as well. Surrey confirmed the late addition to their squad and Rahyl Chahar was named in the starting XI for today’s Group A clash against Nottinghamshire Outlaws at The Kia Oval. Captain Rory Burns won the toss and elected to bat, with Chahar included in the side. The 27-year-old had made a strong impression last season, taking 10 wickets on debut (including career-best figures of 8 for 51) to help Surrey beat Hampshire. He has featured in Championship matches this summer after his IPL commitments with Chennai Super Kings.

The move gives Surrey extra spin options in the limited-overs competition as they look to finish strong in the group stages. In September 2025 the leg-spinner made his Surrey debut against Hampshire in the final round of the County Championship. He finished with match figures of 10 for 118, including a career-best 8 for 51 in the second innings. Those figures were the best by a Surrey debutant in 166 years, surpassing William Mudie’s 7 for 61 from 1859, and helped Surrey to a 20-run victory that secured second place in Division One. Chahar’s spell was also among the best individual innings hauls for the club in the 21st century.

Rahul Chahar returns to Surrey after limited IPL opportunities

Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar did not get many opportunities in the IPL 2026 season with Chennai Super Kings. He went wicket-less in the only game he featured against Punjab Kings. Across his IPL career he has picked up 75 wickets at an average of 29.28 and an economy of 7.78, with a best of 4 for 27. He was picked by CSK for ₹5.2 crore in the auction but could get only one game. The 27-year-old continues to add value in the longer format for Surrey and he has now been registered for the One-Day Cup as well.

Surrey brought him back for the final eight Championship matches of the 2026 season, starting in June. He has already featured, including a three-wicket contribution (1 for 58 and 2 for 57) against Glamorgan in Cardiff while scoring 36 with the bat in the second innings. Across first-class cricket he has played 28 matches, taking 104 wickets at an average of around 27.7 with eight five-wicket hauls. His highest score is 84. Rahul Chahar lost his place in the Indian side following a series of poor performances. This stint with Surrey will give him much needed game time as he looks to make a stronger comeback.
