“Thank you VVS sir for motivating us”: Shreyas Iyer credits VVS Laxman for India’s clean sweep against Zimbabwe
Shreyas Iyer credited stand-in head coach VVS Laxman for inspiring India during their dominant 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe. India sealed the series with a 35-run victory in the third T20I at Harare, completing a clean sweep despite fielding a relatively new-look squad. The triumph was particularly significant for Iyer, who registered his first bilateral T20I series victory.
Speaking in a dressing-room video released by the BCCI, Iyer praised Laxman’s guidance throughout the tour. "Thank you VVS sir for motivating us and inspiring us. Each and every day when we stepped onto the field, I think everything that you mentioned was apt and we could relate to it. So, thank you so much," he said. He also added that Laxman’s messages before matches were relevant to the players and helped them approach the games positively. He also described India’s performance as flawless, while acknowledging the catches the team had dropped. Iyer further thanked the entire support staff for their contribution to the series win.
Laxman, meanwhile, praised Iyer for bouncing back from a difficult start. "I would like to specially congratulate Shreyas because he had a rough start to his captaincy career but the way he came back, right from the first day when he joined us one day before the first game, he was very optimistic," Laxman said, referring to the 0-4 loss to England earlier this month, which was Iyer's first as India's T20 captain.
