The South African international, Rassie Van der Dussen, has announced his retirement from international cricket following his exclusion from South Africa’s contracted list of players. The South African cricketing board made some bold moves in the list as they dropped a couple of players from the hybrid list and only decided to go with Simon Harmer in there. The 37-year-old had an impactful career for the Proteas despite making a late entry into the national squad.
Breaking Through the Ranks: van der Dussen’s Unconventional Rise
Hendrick Erasmus van der Dussen, known as Rassie Van der Dussen, made his international debut in a T20I match against Zimbabwe in 2018. He has played 18 Tests, 71 ODIs and 57 T20Is for South Africa. Before his debut for the national side, he had played cricket in England and in the Caribbean, which helped to establish himself as a reliable middle-order batter. He made his Test debut in 2019 against England, in which he scored two half-centuries from 3 innings, and despite a good-looking start, his form did not hold up well as he was dropped from the squad after playing 18 Tests.
Calm in Chaos: The Legacy of South Africa’s Dependable Middle Order Batter
Then he made his way into the South African squad for the 2019 World Cup, in which he scored half-centuries. He began to showcase his incredible batting prowess in the ODI format and emerged as a key batter in their middle order. In the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, he scored two fine centuries and went on to secure the second-highest average by a South African batter in the format. In his ODI career, he scored 2657 runs from 65 innings at a strike rate of 87, and he also scored 17 half-centuries and 6 centuries. His last international match came in a T20I match against Australia in August 2025, and he scored an unbeaten 38 off just 26 balls.
He will indeed be remembered as one of South Africa’s most reliable batters in the middle order, and he has proved his worth in pressure matches. Even though he made a late entry onto the international stage, he made sure that he performed well enough to cement his spot in the side across formats and is definitely one of South Africa’s most technically sound batters in this generation.
