Strong start masks bowling concerns as Punjab Kings eye dominance against Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Punjab Kings are off to a sensational start in this season of the IPL, with 5 points from the 3 games that they played. They have plenty of positives to look at,t and their Indian core has been firing quite well. In the first match, they displayed some terrific bowling to limit the total of the Gujarat Titans to just 162. Despite the struggles they faced at the top order, Cooper Connolly was the player of the occasion with a well-made half-century. They will be happy to have the addition of Cooper Connolly into the side, as he is proving to be a fine batter for the side at number 3.
They had an even more commanding victory against the Chennai Super Kings, gs as even though the Chennai side fired 210 from their 20 overs, Punjab chased the total down with 8 balls to go. It was a collective effort from the side as Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Cooper Connolly and Shreyas Iyer played some fine quickfire knocks to take the side home. In spite of the terrific start Xavier Bartlett gave the Punjab Kings with the ball against the KKR, the match was abandoned due to rain.
The only weak spot in the team would be the varying form of the pace attack. Arshdeep Singh has struggled this season as he is maintaining an economy rate above 10, and he hasn’t been able to pick a single wicket this season. Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett have had their good moments in the season, but their form seems to be wavering as they are getting hit for plenty of runs around the park.
Vijaykumar Vyshak has been able to deliver with the ball, as even though he may be slightly expensive, he can pick wickets. They lack a proper 6th bowling option and don’t have a second spinner in the side, which may backfire on them in spin-friendly pitches and even if one of their pacers fails, they don’t have a bowler who can cover up an over, as Marcus Stoinis is also proving to be inefficient with the ball.
Despite the struggles they have faced, they have managed to secure two wins from 3 games, with one game being ruled out. The Punjab Kings will be confident that they can take down the vulnerable Sunrisers Hyderabad tomorrow and make their qualification to the playoffs almost inevitable.
