Pakistan has been eliminated from the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after being unable to restrict Sri Lanka to under 147 runs in the last game. However, they won the game, but due to the net run rate, New Zealand qualified for the semi-finals, and Pakistan was knocked out. After this exit, the captain, Salman Ali Agha, was directly asked whether he was planning to step down as captain or if the Pakistan Cricket Board might remove him from the role.

Salman Ali Agha breaks silence on Pakistan T20I captaincy after T20 World Cup exit

After the match against Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, came out for the post-match press conference, where a Pakistani journalist directly asked him a question about his captaincy.

The reporter asked, “Will you yourself step down from the captaincy of T20, or will you have to be removed by the cricket board?”

Salman first gave a slight smile after hearing the direct question, kept his calm, and then responded, “To make a decision right now would be purely emotional. We will return home, take a couple of days, perhaps two to four, and then determine the appropriate course of action."

Salman Ali Agha was appointed as Pakistan’s T20I captain in March 2025. He led the side in 50 T20Is and won 31 of them with a win percentage of 62. Under his captaincy, Pakistan has failed in many major events, such as the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026.

According to the reports by PTI, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is also not happy with Agha’s captaincy. A PTI source said, “Naqvi is not happy at all because this time he was assured by the selectors, team management, and his close aides that the team was set to do well in the World Cup."

There are good chances that Salman will lose his captaincy after Pakistan's exit from the T20 World Cup 2026.
