Veteran fast bowler Shabnim Ismail has officially reversed her international retirement and has been named in South Africa’s 15-player squad for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. The 37-year-old pacer retired from international duty in mid-2023. She accepted a return following talks with Cricket South Africa director Enoch Nkwe and head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. Following her exit after the 2023 T20 World Cup final, the Proteas struggled significantly to replicate Ismail's extreme pace, aggressive mindset, and death-overs economy. South Africa has struggled to replace Ismail's raw pace and experience in late-innings and high-pressure moments. Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi explicitly stated that South Africa lacked a genuine "X-factor" weapon during major recent tournament runs. Ismail provides unmatched raw pace and tournament grit.

Over the last three years, the bowling unit became overly reliant on Marizanne Kapp. Ismail’s inclusion restores South Africa's premier fast-bowling tandem to ease the burden on Kapp, who has faced recent health and fitness layoffs. Despite an international absence, Ismail never stopped competing at the highest level. She recently spearheaded the bowling attack for the Mumbai Indians in the 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL), maintaining her reputation as one of the fastest active bowlers in the world.Ismail has remained highly active in franchise leagues like the WPL and WBBL. She remains South Africa's all-time leading T20I wicket-taker with 123 wickets in 113 games.
