Indian ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill credited his father’s ‘love and passion’ for cricket behind his success. Gill was present at the launch of the Sher-e-Punjab T20 league alongside teammate and fast bowler Arshdeep Singh as well as Prabhsimran Singh and Ramandeep Singh at the PCA International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh on Sunday. During the launch, Gill revealed how his father’s love towards the sport played a key role behind his success. Not only this, but Gill also talked about his cricket academy in his village, which enables young kids from nearby villages to train there for free.

"I think my father always had a dream of seeing me play cricket. We also run a free cricket academy in our village so that children from the nearby areas can come and play there,” Gill said. Not only this but the star batter went on to say that his father visits the academy and tells him about the kids that perform well.

He stated, “Whenever my father gets some free time, he goes to the academy to watch the children play. He would tell me, 'come and watch this boy bat,' or point to another child and say, 'look at his fielding, he's a very good fielder,' even though the child might only be six or seven years old. I think it is because of his love and passion for cricket that I am sitting here today.”

Shubman Gill Reveals the Reason his Father Wears Kurta Pyjama in All Games

During the same event, Shubman Gill also revealed the reason why his father wears kurta-pyjama in every game he attends. Notably, the cricketer’s father Lakhwinder Singh Gill has often been spotted wearing kurta-pyjatama in the stands. Revealing the reason behind it, the 26-year-old batter stated that his father is superstitious regarding a few things and believes that every time he wears the outfit, either India wins or the Indian captain scores.

“Regarding the kurta-pyjama, my father is a little superstitious. He believes that whenever he wears a kurta-pyjama, we either win the match or I score runs. That's why he wears it wherever he goes,” Gill said. Talking about the forthcoming tournament, it will kick off on August 30 and will be played till September 13. The league is set to feature some of the biggest names from the state including Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, Prabhsimran Singh and Ramandeep Singh. The contest will feature a total of six teams, who will play in 27 matches for the coveted title.
