The Indian Men’s test team captain, Shubman Gill, has been awarded the Wisden Trophy for his outstanding individual performance in 2025. The Indian test team was undergoing a major phase of transition with the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. That’s exactly when the youngster stepped up and smashed 430 runs from 2 innings against England at Edgbaston. Shubman Gill was one of India’s best batters in the test series against England last July.

Shubman Gill was looked up to as the successor of Rohit Sharma as the captain in test cricket by the selectors. He was part of the Indian setup for quite some time and now he currently plays at the No.4 spot, which was occupied by Virat Kohli previously. Shubman Gill has adjusted to his new spot quite well and he has displayed terrific batting form.

Double-century masterclass and captaincy breakthrough underline Gill’s rise as India’s new Test leader

During India’s Tour of England in July for the test series, there was a major change in India’s batting unit as many of the stalwarts had retired. It was the first time since 2011 that India went into a series without the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin. The squad was considered as a young dynamic squad and the pundits weren’t expecting much from this India side. Shubman Gill was appointed as the captain of the test side and Rishabh Pant was announced as the vice captain. Sai Sudharshan and Arshdeep Singh had earned their first Test call-ups. Karun Nair was also brought back into the squad due to his phenomenal batting prowess in the domestic circuit and IPL.

During the 2nd match of the Test series, the Indian side was coming off a loss in the first game. They had put up a fighting performance but it wasn’t good enough to outsmart the home side. Shubman Gill had scored a century in his 1st innings as captain and he was looking well in touch. However, his jaw-dropping performance came in the 2nd game of the series as he troubled the England bowlers consistently.

In his 1st innings, Shubman Gill scored a sensational double-ton and he got to a score of 269 runs off 387 balls. He carried on his momentum in the 2nd innings of the match as well as scoring another fine century. In the 2nd innings, Shubman Gill scored 161 off 162 balls and took the fight to the England bowlers. He was awarded the Player of the Match award for his match-winning knock and that secured his first victory as Test captain for the Indian side.

Shubman Gill has been one of India’s prominent batters in the international stage and his form reflects that. He is regarded as the next all-format superstar for India and the selectors have entrusted him with the captaincy of the national side in ODIs and Test cricket.
