Indian ODI captain Shubman Gill returned to Vijay Hazare Trophy for the first time in this edition. He opened the batting for Punjab and fell cheaply. Fans on social media started to troll and there was plenty of criticism for the current Indian captain. Shubman Gill was dismissed for 11 of 12 balls. In a tournament where batters are scoring runs for fun across different matches, Gill was trolled for failing as he fell early in a small chase of 211 against Goa.
Despite the fall of Shubman Gill, Punjab cruised home in the chase as they got past the total within 35 overs. Gill scored 2 boundaries and then ended up being dismissed by Vasuki Koushik in the 5th over of the match. Harnoor Singh led the chase with an unbeaten 94-run innings in 90 balls and Naman Dhir scored 68 runs of 65 balls. Punjab are currently the table toppers of Group C.
Shubman Gill averages more than 56 in his ODI career and has put up very good performances in the past. But his white ball game in 2025 has been really bad and he scored only one half-century in T20s in 2025 which saw him out of the WT20 squad. Fans on social media have started questioning his performances and even in the T20 format when Gill was being backed there was a lot of back clash.
